10 Ways To Jump Start Your Creative Career
While most of you know I'm a blogger, some of you might not know that I am also a stylist... which is actually how I started off in the fashion industry. After almost heading to Queens University for political science, I remember sitting there after turning down my offer and wondering, f*ck how am I going to do this. I have no experience, no degree & all I knew was that I loved fashion, speaking my mind and creating art.
I went in having no idea what my next moves were going to be and have come out the other side confident in my career,
Curious as to how you can jump start your fashion career but not sure where to start? Follow along as I give you some of the best advice I can to get you where I am in my career today.
Paying your dues is an important part of getting your foot into any industry, so be selective when picking when and where to work for free. Find an internship position where there's a purpose in your position and there's room for growth. If you're going to be emptying garbages and running coffee errands (both of which I've done) it better be worth your time. These are the moments that will shape your future, so make good impressions, connect with the right people and out yourself out there.
I started off my career with two internships:
Lamania Boutique- social media manager, stylist, model & blogger.
* I styled my first fashion show here, learned what it was like to share my opinions as a blogger and modelled for the first time
Faulhaber Communications- full-time social media intern (university requirement, I never went to university)
* I covered high-end events, began meeting celebrities and lead to working with them as an influencer to this day
Step out of your comfort zone, do things you wouldn't normally and go for jobs you're unqualified for. Taking risks is an important part of life and a sure way to jump start your career. While you might not always get the answers you're looking for or necessarily the job you want, showing that you're willing and capable can go a long way. Hell it may even work out and sooner than later
Making friends, connecting with individuals and ultimately going out is a HUGE part of the industry. This is a 24/7 job so be prepared to work all day and network all night.... while it may seem luxurious and sometimes it is, it's important to find a balance and connect with the right people.
When you begin getting invited to events, you might feel over-whelmed like most of us have at the beginning of our blogging career. While cool spaces, free booze and loads of product can be tempting, you'll find yourself wanting to go to everything... and it's fun at first, it truly is. But what you need to remember is you're there to work.
Be moderate with your alcohol, don't always talk to the same people, go to select events and make sure to introduce yourself to the client/ PR reps - it's what you're there for, to build relationships that lead to jobs
* and if you do it right, you'll eventually be getting paid to attend certain events.
Create Unique Content
Of course there are moments when I'm scrolling through Instagram and click the save button in the bottom-right corner. Inspiration is an amazing way to fuel work ethic but it's important to stay true to your own creative edge and produce content that represents you.
Your work will never be as good as those you're trying to copy. Creating unique content is your best bet for success... So, as much as you try to mimic someone else art, photos, fashion or whatever it may be... you'll never feel as satisfied as you do when creating something completely on your own.
Go out into the world, talk to people, take your time to look around, find inspiration past the length of your finger tips
Pitch, Pitch, Pitch.
Waiting for people to solely reach out to you is one of the biggest mistakes you can make when trying to branch out in an industry. Whether it be with blogging, styling or whatever career you're looking to pursue. It's important to pitch ideas to people who can make them come to life. Don't try to do everything on your own or wait for things to happen. When you want to build your career and have great ideas to get there, put them out there... the worst answer you'll hear back is no. (then you pick up and try again!)
don't know how to find a contact? heres my number #1 secret I learned working in PR:
How to find who you need to contact?
step 1: search for the company you want to work with (make sure you're looking under companies)
step 2: click the link and select "see all employees" - look for the most relevant position you are hoping to contact (in this case it would be marketing or PR)
step 3: once you find the name of the person you are looking for, your next step is RESEARCH. See if you can find a corresponding email to that person online - there are websites where you can look up someones email by simply putting in their position, name & employment. There is no guarantee but it is definitely worth a try and has worked in the past)
Put Yourself On The Grid
Put yourself in front of the people and brands you want to work with.
It's as simple as that.
Want to work with a company but don't have the right contact? Take the first step and make yourself known!
When I first wanted to work with Ouai and hadn't heard back after sending an email, I took matters into my own hands. I began creating #OuaiObsessed worthy content, something of which I knew they would like and boom. I received my first partnership with them in less than a week. It may not always be that easy, but just because you're looking to make money off of partnerships; it's important to stay organic and promote what you like first.. the rest will come later.
Learn From Others
And Your Mistakes
People make mistakes, we're human and you will fuck up... Be prepared to loose a good job, miss a deadline or have someone simply not like you. It'll feel like the end of the world at the moment, but whats important is how you react. Stay calm and professional!
Its okay to make mistakes, but only if you're learning from them!
Fake It Till You Make It
No matter what situation you're in, the best tip I can give you is to fake it till you make it. Feel like you don't belong? Walk in like you do. Don't know anyone at the party? Make some friends. Everyone has their good days and bad days, you may feel like you've made the next big step in your career one day and then have 30 where you feel like you've done nothing.... but until the next AHA moment in your career.... act like everyday is your AHA moment. What you put out there comes back to you. It's only a matter of time.
Prove Your Worth
The best way to make it in this industry is to prove your worth. Make people see your purpose and show them what you can do for them. Whether you want to work with an upscale company, your favourite brand, your fashion idol or whoever it may be... make them want to work with you. Go above and beyond, go the extra mile... because there's a lot of competition coming into things. Stand out, it's the only way you'll make it.
