Drawing From the Runway with Joanna Baker
What better way to view fashion than through the eyes of an illustrator? You don’t just get the piece itself. From our daily Instagram feeds to firmly becoming everyone’s surefire way of expressing their individual selves – fashion is an ever going art of our lives that we all want to be inspired by on a daily basis.
Let us introduce Joanna Baker - a fashion illustrator from New York City who connects her love for runway looks with her love for art. After graduating from Washington College with a degree in Studio Art, Joanna moved to New York to attend Parsons to earn a degree in fashion design. While in design school, she realized her passion lies in the sketching of the entire process and quit her day job to become a full-time fashion illustrator in 2015. It was then that she started an illustration blog as an excuse to keep drawing in her free time.
Joanna has been able to work with a variety of clients to create custom illustrations that she advertises on her Instagram. She has worked on numerous illustrated custom designs in the form fashion portraits, logos, and brand content.
Joanna specializes in drawing gowns and shoes in pencils and markers – especially those that sparkle. She enjoys drawing her favorite pieces from different couture shows during Fashion Week and placing them all next to each other in one image.
The thought of landing a design job in the fashion industry sounds like a dream, and giving it up to start an online illustration business is a challenging risk that not everyone is willing to take. However, for innovative designer Joanna Baker, this fearless move is one of the best decisions she’s ever made.
