New to the field? Always been curious but didn't know how to get in? We've been there. This is where you start. IAO founder Saskia leads a generous exploration of perfumery in all its applications, with an emphasis on creative approaches.
Designed for absolute beginners, Saskia will give a rollicking tour through perfume history, explain the workings of the contemporary perfume industry, discuss experimental practices with scent - be it independent perfumery or olfactory art. Then, we’ll smell and discuss a curated set of molecules, explore perfume taxonomies, and finishing the session with a blending demonstration and a collaborative formulation exercise.
A great first step for anybody looking to work with scent, or simply understand the field. Any questions, of course, will be amply and generously answered. We will smell, we will talk, and we will blend.
+ Overview of perfume history, industry and contemporary experimental applications+ Introduction to aromatic molecules (natural and synthetic)+ Introduction to perfume taxonomies+ Introduction to composing and compounding perfume+ Introduction to perfume creation through a group blending exercise+ Introduction to different applications and strategies for exhibiting and sharing scent
Take-aways:Participants will leave with the basic knowledge they need to start working with scent - either as part of their existing creative practice or as a budding perfumer. Participants also leave with a more considered understanding and appreciation for the ins and outs of composing scent formulas. This class is part of the requirements for the The Institute for Art and Olfaction Foundations of Independent Perfumery Certificate.
Sign-up Requirements:No experience or knowledge necessary!
When we host a class or workshop, we often order the materials to be used in the class well in advance, based on how many people have signed up (and padding a bit for safety). We also use class proceeds to pay our teachers. Although we realize that life has a funny way of getting in the way of the best laid plans, as a small non-profit we cannot afford to carry the burden of lost proceeds and materials.
With that in mind, here is our refund policy:
– Cancellation with refund or credit requests made 2 weeks or more (14 days) before the scheduled class will be honored with gusto! We’ll miss you, but will 100% refund your spot, or give you credit for another class.– Refunds or class credits requested less than 14 days before the scheduled class: We will refund you 50% of your class fee. Why? Because we’ve already ordered the materials.– Refunds or class credits requested less than 48 hours before the class, on the day of the class or after the class has happened will not be granted.
Please note that event tickets are non-transferable.
